PRAGMATIC PLAY
Twilight Princess from Pragmatic Play seems to take inspiration from popular anime and manga themes, similar to its predecessor Starlight Princess. However, it distinguishes itself by offering gameplay that is fresher and less recycled. Unlike a mere reskin of Gates of Olympus, Twilight Princess offers a new experience for players who enjoy cartoonish worlds hosted by charismatic characters.
The game's setting, while not overly remarkable, features a cartoon heroine set against a cloudy backdrop high up in the atmosphere. The visuals may not be groundbreaking, but they will likely appeal to fans of similar anime-inspired slots like Starlight Princess and Moon Princess. However, during free spins, the game's atmosphere changes to reflect the twilight theme, adding a touch of ambiance to the gameplay.
In Twilight Princess, instead of using a scatter pays system, wins are determined by landing at least 5 matching symbols in connected blocks either horizontally or vertically on the grid. Unlike Starlight Princess, Twilight Princess does not feature a tumble feature. The game utilizes a highly volatile math model, earning a 5 out of 5 rating, with a default RTP of 96.08% or 96.01% when buying free spins. Players can choose stakes ranging from 20 p/c to $/€240 per spin, and the game is played on a 5x5 grid.
The lower-paying symbols in Twilight Princess include circle, triangle, diamond, hexagon, and heart-shaped items, while the higher-paying symbols consist of a shield-type object, a flower, a bell, a crown, and a princess. Winning blocks of 5 matching symbols yield payouts ranging from 0.25 to 2.5 times the bet, with larger blocks of 20 or more symbols awarding higher payouts of 7.5 to 50 times the bet.
In Twilight Princess, the game incorporates a feature in the base game involving wild symbols with multipliers, which are then enhanced in the free spins round with additional abilities. Additionally, players have the option to buy free spins for quicker access to the bonus round.
The wild symbol, depicted as an ornate pink orb with a 'W' emblem, serves as a substitute for any symbol except the scatter. When wilds land, they come with multipliers of x2, x3, x5, or x10, which apply to any wins the wild contributes to. If more than one wild is part of the same winning combination, their multiplier values are added together. Furthermore, a single wild can be involved in multiple winning blocks simultaneously, and a full screen of wilds awards 50 times the bet.
Scatter symbols, represented by golden orbs, can appear on all reels. Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols not only awards payouts of 2x, 15x, or 100x the bet, respectively but also triggers 10 free spins. During the free spins feature, any wild symbols that appear on the reels remain in place until the end of the round. Additionally, scatters may land during free spins, overlaying on top of other symbols. Getting 2, 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols during free spins grants an additional 5, 10, 20, or 30 free spins, respectively.
Players have the option to purchase free spins directly from the base game for a cost of 100 times the current bet. When using the buy-free spins feature, the triggering spin guarantees the appearance of 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols, depending on the number required to trigger the free spins round.

In terms of mechanics, Twilight Princess may offer more originality compared to Starlight Princess, but it doesn't give off the impression of a game that received a lot of attention and care in its development. The background is rather plain and lacks excitement, and aside from a few symbols and the floating princess character, the game doesn't fully embrace the manga and anime theme. Perhaps adding a more fitting soundtrack could enhance the overall experience.
Similarly, the game's features, centered around a wild multiplier that becomes sticky in free spins, feel basic and somewhat uninspired. However, they still have the potential to provide thrills, especially during the free spins round where sticky wilds can lead to decent outcomes. While the base game may not be as engaging, the free spins feature with sticky wilds activated by the princess's magic staff adds excitement. Although the game lacks a tumble feature, it still offers the chance to win up to 7,500 times the bet.
Despite its shortcomings, fans of sticky multiplier wild features and anime/manga themes may still find enjoyment in Twilight Princess. However, it falls short of fully leveraging its subject matter and lacks innovation. Nonetheless, it manages to deliver a satisfactory experience with its set of features, wrapped in a Sailor Moon-esque aesthetic.
